Extending Our Learning in Cross Cultural Communication

Staff members from our four elementary schools, along with Central Office staff, had the opportunity to participate in a one-hour webinar offered by Primary Source this week focused on Cross-Cultural Communication.  This focus is part of a broader plan the district is working on to increase our collective understanding of cultural differences.

One of the major focal points of the webinar was Geert Hofstede’s Dimensions of national culture. The brief description below explains Hofstede’s Dimensions:

Professor Geert Hofstede conducted one of the most comprehensive studies of how values in the workplace are influenced by culture. He defines culture as “the collective programming of the mind distinguishing the members of one group or category of people from others”.

Staff also had an opportunity to reflect on the impact of communication styles from various cultures, as well as body language (i.e. proximity, eye contact).  The hour webinar provided opportunities for both new learning and reinforcement of prior learning for staff.

We look forward to continued opportunities to discuss, share, and reflect upon this important topic with staff members throughout the district as we move forward.
