I hope this letter finds you enjoying the summer with family and friends. This time of year is routinely busy at BHS, with numerous projects underway, and preparing for the upcoming school year. In just a few short weeks, we will be back in full swing and I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of some important information.
Schedules – Enclosed is your child’s schedule which reflects teacher names/room numbers. Study Hall room numbers will be provided on the first day of school. If this schedule happens to read “Incomplete Schedule”, it is imperative that you contact the Guidance Office at 781-270-1780 to schedule an appointment. Guidance Counselors will be available (by appointment only) during the weeks of August 8-11 and August 15-18 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. to resolve any conflicts. Walk-ins are welcome during the week of August 22-25 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
2016/2017 BHS Schedule – In an effort to incorporate common planning time for BHS faculty, there will be a common planning day scheduled on several days between October and May. Common planning time helps improve instruction by allowing teachers to share best practices, review student work, and plan curriculum and lessons together. This time will fall when some of our Block 8’s would have. The bell schedule for the common planning days can be found on the website, and the specific common planning days will be released later in the summer. Please note that on common planning days school will open at the normal time and buses will run on a regular schedule. However, homeroom will not start until 8:00 a.m. If your son/daughter comes to school prior to 8:00 a.m., they can go to the library or cafeteria, as on other days if they arrive early. As usual, breakfast will be served and, in addition, the fitness center will be available for student use.
Class of 2020/New Student iPads – We are offering iPad rollout sessions on August 18, 25 and 29 at either 9 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. This year, NO REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. A parent/guardian and student must attend one session. All sessions will be held at the Burlington High School Auditorium and will last approximately 45 minutes. Please feel free to visit www.bpsedtech.org for more information.
Class of 2020 and New Student Orientation – All 9th-grade students, as well as any students new to Burlington High School, are invited to our Freshman Orientation on Tuesday, August 23, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Students will have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the building layout and the locations of their classrooms. Administrators and student leaders will also provide a general overview of our curriculum, rules, procedures and extracurricular activities. Following an informational session in the auditorium, students will meet in small discussion groups with student mentors. Kindly remind your son/daughter to bring their schedule with them.
Class of 2020 Digital Citizenship Requirement – Starting with the Class of 2020 (incoming freshman), students are required to audit our Digital Citizenship Course as a graduation requirement. This pass/fail course is entirely online, is self-paced, and must be completed by the end of the 2017/2018 school year. Students will earn 1 credit upon completion of the course. This course comprises 8 units that will help our students understand the importance of being a good digital citizen and covers topics such as information literacy, internet safety, privacy and security, digital footprint and reputation, cyberbullying and more. Students can access the course at https://classroom.google.com and hit “join class (+)” which is located in the upper right-hand corner of classroom. From there, they should enter the access code: 41qhy4. The instructions on accessing/completing the online course will also be provided to each student in September.
School Opening – This year school starts after Labor Day on Tuesday, September 6, which will be a full day of school. Pictures for student IDs will be taken on the first day of school. Order forms will be mailed home by Lifetouch for those families wishing to purchase portrait packages.
Save the Date! – BHS will host its annual Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 15, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Parents will have the opportunity to meet with teachers while experiencing a simulated school day. As always, Administrators and Guidance Counselors will also be available throughout the evening to answer questions.
I look forward to a productive and exciting year. If you have any questions, or if I can do anything to assist you and your family, please do not hesitate to contact me at 781-273-7662. With only a few weeks left, I wish you continued relaxation, enjoyment, and fun this summer.
