Boil Order Water Notice

All Consumers of the Town of Burlington Water Division are hereby advised that, due to E. coli bacteria detections in water samples, all water from the system used for human consumption e.g. brushing of teeth, hand washing, washing of vegetables or food preparation etc., should be boiled before use.  The water should be brought to and kept at a vigorous boil for not less than ONE MINUTE.

Discard any ice, juice, formula, and uncooked foods that were prepared with water from PWS’ distribution system on or after September 20, 2011.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), Drinking Water Program has been notified of the problem and has approved the procedures being taken.  This BOIL WATER ORDER remains in effect until the water quality problem is corrected, and the Department of Environmental Protection terminates the Order in writing.  When the BOIL WATER ORDER is officially terminated you will be notified, but until that time, water must be boiled as described above to protect your health.

During the normal weekly water testing, some sites tested positive for total coliform bacteria.  Additional samples were collected and tested, and the results showed the presence of E. coli bacteria at some locations.  In order to protect the health of our customers, MassDEP and the Town are issuing a Boil Water Order.

Information on what you can do is available on the MassDEP website at:

If you have any questions, please call the Department of Public Works at 781-270-1670.

Just a quick question, the advisory is saying to use bottled water for hand washing. Just wondering how this will work for schools?

We are making sure that all students and staff have access to sanitizing dispensers. The DEP website recommends sanitizer if there is not access to boiled water. Eric Conti

Mr. Conti, I want to tell you what a great job you are doing with keeping everyone informed about the water ban. I think your doing a better job than the town and the local news altogether. Thanks
