State to Release Student Growth DATA Friday

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is releasing student grown scores for the first time on Friday, October 2nd.  I am unsure of the format, but I am excited to have the information.

As I have written about often, current MCAS performance is most highly correlated to parent education and wealth.  In contrast, student academic growth is most highly correlated to quality instruction.  With the high quality of teachers we have in Burlington, I am happy that the conversation is changing from a year-end measure to a growth measure.  Quality instruction is something we currently enjoy and can further develop.

I am planning on attending a training on the new growth information in October.  While the information is available this year, the DESE will not formally use the growth measures until next year.  Stay tuned for more specifics…
