The letter below was sent home with students this afternoon. Please remind your children that we will respond to every incident and threat of this nature seriously. Thank you to the Burlington Police Department for their support in managing this unfortunate prank.
This morning one of our teachers discovered a bomb threat in a grade 8 classroom. It was written on small white board and placed in a student’s desk.
Shortly after the threat was made, members of the school administration were able to identify the individual who wrote the threat. Although, we believe the threat was meant as a joke, the Burlington Police Department was contacted. The police communicated with the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council and the School Threat Assessment and Resource Systems (STARS).
Detective Thomas Fournier, School Resource Officer came to Marshall Simonds immediately and conducted an extensive investigation. Lieutenant Thomas Duffy of the Burlington Police Department met with me and other police personnel and determined that the threat was at Level 1. Lieutenant Duffy recommended that the students leave the building for a short time so the building could be searched.
Students and teachers reported to their outdoor fire drill areas while a thorough search of the building was conducted.
The police department determined that the school was safe and students returned to classes.
I want to commend students and faculty for their cooperation during this unfortunate incident.
